Information Technology In October 2008, Johnson County's Information Technology Services (ITS) Department launched a new initiative to reduce the amount of electricity consumed by employees' computers. The average desktop computer uses 180 watts or more of power when processing and only about 20 percent less when at idle. In a low-power state, however, computers use less than 10 watts of power. Under the power-down initiative, the ITS Department is using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to put desktop computers in over 1,500 work stations into a low power state automatically between the hours of 6:15 p.m. and 5:50 a.m. Monday through Friday and throughout the weekend. The effort is credited with saving the county an estimated $64,000 annually in utility costs and reducing its CO2e emissions by about 679 metric tons per year.
