Greenhouse gas inventory and tracking

Under the direction of the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), Johnson County staff oversaw the development of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in 2009. There are two inventories – one for county government operations and the other documenting emissions associated with all human activity in Johnson County. Both inventories quantify emissions for a 2005 base year. The county is working to identify strategies for meeting the BOCC goal of reducing base year organizational GHG emissions one-third by 2020. The goal that the BOCC has set for reducing community-wide emissions will require an 80 percent reduction in GHGs by 2050. Meeting this goal will require broad community partnerships and firm commitments from businesses, governments and residents to live and work in a more sustainable manner.

County government has already implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, and more are being planned. Updates will be posted on this page as they become available.
